3rd Annual Coffee Bluff Marina Fish Derby

There are 22 entries in this year long event with a total purse of $200.

Only 15 weeks remain for the 3rd Annual Coffee Bluff Marina Fish Derby, and a new leader has emerged!! Dr. Jerry Case caught a 7 pound 6 ounce black drum yesterday to reclaim the lead with 9 species and a ton of weight! The race is getting narrow, and a few anglers are still competing to get the 10 species…who will be the first??

Rules and Regulations for 2011-2012

* Entry fee is $10 per person.

* The beginning date is September 1st, 2011….the ending date is August 31st, 2012. You can enter at any time throughout the year, but must be registered before weighing in any fish at least by 1 day.

* All fish must be fresh as determined by the judges, meaning if we won’t eat it, it doesn’t count!

* You have the entire year to catch 10 species of fish: Speckled trout, Redfish, Flounder, Spanish mackerel, Whiting, Sheepshead, and Black Drum are 7 species required. A big Bull Red Drum is required, and the final 2 spots can either be one of these three species…Tripletail, Spadefish, or a Striped Bass caught on the Ogeechee River or it’s tributaries.

* All fish must be caught on hook and line in coastal Georgia waters, except no fish may be taken from the Savannah River. All fish must be caught south of the Savannah River to St. Mary’s River.

* All fish must be legal and weighed in at Coffee Bluff Marina during operating hours.

* Winner is declared by the most species caught by the tournament end date, August 31st, 2012.

* In case of a tie, the tiebreaker is determined by total aggregate weight of all species caught by an individual.

* In the species category of the Bull Red Drum…no weight will be given, but there is a photo release to check off the box. The fish must have you and the fish in the picture, and a ruler of at least 36 inches being held up against the fish. The fish must be longer than 36 inches. Your hat must be turned sideways in the photo…no exceptions to this rule. A photo must be texted or emailed to Coffee Bluff Marina to receive credit.

* All anglers must weigh in by boat at Coffee Bluff Marina. No fish can be driven to the marina by car.

* In the wildcard division, 2 species can be either a tripletail, spadefish, or striped bass taken from the Ogeechee River or it’s tributaries. No striped bass will be weighed in unless the angler pulls up to Coffee Bluff Marina prior to fishing to declare that they are targeting striped bass, and the fish must also come in by boat…no exceptions.

* Fish can be culled throughout the year…in other words, if a participant catches and records a fish for the derby, and then a few weeks later catches a bigger fish of the same species, the bigger fish’s weight will take the place of the original fish, allowing the total aggregate weight to be increased.

On Saturday, September 8th, 2012, we will hold an annual Customer Appreciation Sale and present a nice plaque and tournament pot to the winner. Hope to see you there! The first person to catch all 10 species receives a free entry in the 2012-2013 4th Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby…and, we will put the names of the folks who caught the biggest of each species in a hat, and whoever has their name drawn from the hat will also receive a free entry in the 2012-2013 Derby!!

2nd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby Results

Congratulations to Mr. Jay Turner, pictured above, as the 1st Place Winner of the 2nd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby, which ended August 31, 2011. Jay was the only angler out of 36 anglers to catch all 10 species…his name went on the plaque pictured above which will hang at the marina as the winner of the 2nd Derby, and he won the pot of $340!! Nice job, Jay!!

The end results of the 2nd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby looked like this:

1st Place was Jay Turner, who caught all 10 species and had a total weight of 51 pounds 13 ounces.

2nd Place was Dr. Jerry Case, who caught 9 of the 10 species. Jerry had a total weight of 31 pounds 0 ounces.

3rd Place with 8 species was David Sloan…David’s 8 species totaled 34 pounds 0 ounces.

There was only 1 angler out of 36 who caught all 10 species required. Jay Turner was the first and only angler to land all 10 species, and therefore won a free entry in the 3rd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby, which began September 1st, 2011. Also, we placed the names of the anglers who caught the biggest fish of each species in a hat, and drew from that a name who also won a free entry in the 3rd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby. The biggest fish of each species looked like this…

Speckled trout went to Jay Turner with 3 pounds 13 ounces

Redfish also went to Jay Turner with 4 pounds 12 ounces

Flounder went to Jay Turner with 4 pounds 3 ounces

Spanish mackerel went to Jay Turner with 5 pounds 11 ounces

Whiting went to Amy Golden with 1 pound 2 ounces

Pompano went to Jay Turner with 2 pounds 9 ounces

Striped bass went to Jay Turner with 11 pounds 6 ounces

Tripletail went to Jimmy Wheeler with 24 pounds 2 ounces

Sheepshead went to David Sloan with 10 pounds 7 ounces

Black sea bass went to Jay Turner with 3 pounds 8 ounces

Amy pulled the name of David Sloan from the above list, so David has earned a free ride for the 3rd Annual Coffee Bluff Fish Derby!

Thanks to all 36 anglers for putting on quite a show this past year, and we look forward to the new derby that began September 1st!

At Coffee Bluff Marina, we want to be able to offer you everything that a marina in coastal Georgia can provide! We have wet slip rentals, a boat hoist, and mechanical services for you and your boat. Take a look at our services and feel free to give us a call at 912-925-7474 for specific questions.

Wet Slip Rentals - Coffee Bluff Marina can handle various overnight wet slip rentals for your vessel. A long-term wet slip is available at $10 per foot per month with a signed annual contract. If you do not wish to keep your boat with us for a full year, a month-to-month wet slip is available at $11 per foot per month. Weekly rates are also available at $4 per foot per week, and overnight dockage for transient use or daily use is $1 per foot per night.

Electicity - 30 amp electrical outlets are available on the docks for $40 per month, or $4 for daily use.

Fuel - Coffee Bluff Marina carries non-ethanol mid-grade marine fuel…rated the best for outboard motor use. Price varies with market conditions, so please call to inquire about current rates per gallon.

Boat Hoist - Our boat hoist is inoperable…the City of Savannah has authorized a rebuilding project for Coffee Bluff Marina…our brand new $5 million marina will begin soon, with plans to start construction late summer, 2012. The new lift and facilities should be completed by early 2013 – until then, we are open, but operating without a lift or hoist.

Boat, motor, and trailer repairs - Coffee Bluff Marina now offers repair and maintenance for your boat, motor, and trailers! Stop by and let us give you an estimate for any of the following items:

Live shrimp are back in the tanks!

There has been some good fish weighed in this week! First, on Sunday, David Wood and his friends went out for more cobia, and they were rewarded!

On Monday, Mike Smith took his son, Graham Smith, and his friend Ben Allen, both of the 3rd ID at Fort Stweart, out for a day of fishing. The Coffee Bluff Inshore Fishing Club is holding it’s monthly tournament this week, and Mike was entered. The format was 3 aggregate weight of speckled trout, and Mike came back with 3 that went 5 pounds 9 ounces. Here, he is holding his biggest of the day that just went over 2 pounds.

Yesterday, Jerry Case and I picked that day to fish our tournament, and we headed south. As the tide turned, so did the fishing! We had a great day…several large black drum were caught!

Jerry caught a big 7 pound 10 ounce one for the derby, too!

The trout got good, too! I was able to catch 3 nice trout, but not enough to surpass Mike Smith…my biggest was just under 2 pounds.

Jerry also got 3 nice trout, and his biggest went 2 pounds 10 ounces! But, it still wasn’t enough to top Mike’s fish from Monday!

In all, Jerry and I caught 11 different species of fish! I also caught 4 flounder, all on Gulp swimming mullets, with the exception of this one, which was on live shrimp…

We have live shrimp and jumbo mud minnows!!

Educational Field trips to Ossabaw Island-Take a step back in time and witness one of Georgia’s barrier islands the way life use to be! We’ll depart the marina at 9 am on select dates, and you’ll get to see and experience the marshes of coastal Georgia. There is plenty of wildlife and points of interest in our 30 minute boat ride to Ossabaw Island, where you’ll be met by the on-island coordinator and naturalist for the Ossabaw Island Foundation -http://www.ossabawisland.org/. You will be led on a 3 hour field trip of the northern section of the island, where you’ll witness history right before your eyes! You’ll see the North Island Plantation site, the longest unpaved road in the State of Georgia, and see the archaeological significance of the old tabby slave cabins, which has received a good deal of national attention the past few years. Access to Ossabaw Island is limited, and this is one field trip you will forever remember! The cost is $100 per person, and includes the boat ride, guide fees, captain’s fees, and Ossabaw Foundation fees.

Dates for 2012 include May 4th and 17th, June 7th and 22nd, July 5th and 20th, August 2nd and 17th, September 7th and 21st, and October 5th. You can also view these dates by clicking on our “News & Events” page to find the pre-determined dates that these trips will be conducted.

Fishing Seminars – Coffee Bluff Marina has put together 3 “how to” fishing seminars designed to teach you a different aspect of fishing! The first is “Redfish in the Grass” seminars. When we have a full moon or a new moon, that only means one thing…flooded grass! And, when the grass gets flooded, redfish get up in the grass to search for food! If you’ve ever wanted to see what a tailing redfish looks like, this is a great seminar. On the way to the flooded prairies, we cover different types of baits and rigging, and then we’ll show you what type of geographical terrain you are looking for to find these fish. Once there, we don our waders and start stalking, showing you how to locate, cast, and hopefully catch tailing reds! The cost of this seminar is $60 per angler, and seminar dates include June 1st, June 30th, July 30th, August 28th, September 16th, September 30th, October 14th, October 28th, and November 17th. The second seminar we are conducting this year is the “Topwater Trout” seminar…We’ll depart the marina early on a 22 foot Pathfinder, and make our way to some speckled trout waters a short distance away. We’ll show you how to locate trout, and what kind of topwater lures work best for the conditions. We’ll go over the casting skills, rods & reels desired, and line strength, plus show you how to properly work your baits to target and catch speckled trout when blowing up a topwater bait! Seats are limited, and cost is $60 per angler. Call early to reserve your seat…put your float and live bait away and learn how to bust big trout on artificial lures! Seminar dates include May 26th, June 23rd, July 7th, August 5th, September 29th, October 6th, and November 3rd. Finally, our third seminar this year is the “Running of the Bulls” Seminar…On October 7th, from 7 am until 12 noon…If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to target and catch big bull reds, this is the seminar for you! We’ll cover the rigging and the baits, proper rod and reel selection, then load up in our boat and head out to the shoals to catch some 40 inch fish! The seminar fee is $80 per angler.

Beach Shuttles - Looking to get away from it all? Coffee Bluff Marina now conducts shuttles to beaches on remote barrier islands away from the crowd! We can take you to the south end of Wassaw Island, where you can enjoy the beaches and hike the National Wildlife Refuge trails on the interior of the island, or we can take you to Ossabaw Island and let you have your own beach! The Nature Conservancy purchased Wassaw in 1969 from the heirs of a wealthy northerner who acquired the island just after the Civil War. Wassaw was later incorporated into the Savannah Coastal Refuge System. Today, the island is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which maintains a dock and small headquarters on Wassaw Creek. Wassaw’s virgin stands of oak, pine and cedar support an incredible diversity of animal species. This rare bit of wilderness attracts a large variety of migratory birds, along with alligators, nesting sea turtles and manatees. Beach shuttles can be scheduled for anytime, with a drop off and pick up time pre-determined at the party’s descretion. Shuttle fees are $150 for goups of 1-6, all inclusive. Groups of more than 6 can still be accommodated if advance notice is given.

Redfish Shuttles – A short boat ride away is a prairie full of reds! On the New Moon and Full Moon tides, our grasses become flooded, and redfish move in to prowl. If you’ve ever wanted to see redfish tailing in the grass, this is the trip for you! We’ll load your gear up and whisk you away, then return to pick you up a short time later after you’ve experienced a fishing bonanza…Shuttle to and from the grasslands cost $150 round trip, and we can accommodate up to 6 anglers on each mothership. Simply divide the number of your anglers into $150, and you’ll have a per person charge. We encourage you to bring light-weight waders if you plan to wade, but they are required to enjoy the marshes.

Reservation and Cancellation Policy

1. If a reservation is made within 14 days of a trip, seminar, or any other function, then full payment is due immediately.

2. If a reservation is made more than 14 days out from the event, a 50% deposit is due immediately to hold the reservation, and a check can be mailed to Coffee Bluff Marina, or a credit card can be given over the phone. The balance of the event fee is due 14 days prior to the event trip.

3. If a reservation is cancelled outside of 14 days from the event, and the reservation was paid for by cash or check, then a 100% refund will be given. If the reservation was made by credit card, then a 5% administrative fee will be charged, and the balance refunded.

4. If a reservation is cancelled within 14 days of the event, AND the seats can be filled, then a refund will be given based on the conditions listed in #3. If the seats cannot be filled, then the reservation WILL NOT be given a refund.

5. If a trip is cancelled due to inclement weather that is decided by Coffee Bluff Marina, then a 100% refund will be given regardless of how the trip was paid for…cash, check, or credit card.

Boat and Kayak Rentals

Pontoon Boat Rentals

Coffee Bluff Marina offers pontoon boat rentals for 2 hours, half day (4 hours), 3/4 day (6 hours), or all day (8 hours). All fuel is included with the price of the rental. Fish the rivers and marshes of the Coffee Bluff area for numerous species, including speckled trout, redfish, flounder, or let us point you and your family in the right direction for spending a day catching crabs for a meal! If you’d rather relax than catch fish or crabs, we can show you where to go to just get away from it all and chill out for awhile under the sun. Pontoon boat rentals go for $75 for 2 hours, $100 for half day, $125 for 6 hours, or $150 all day. We carry crabbing supplies and bait in the marina store, and if you don’t have fishing rods and reels, we rent those, too, for $5 per rod & reel. Our 18 foot pontoon boat can accommodate up to 7 people maximum whether they are adults or children.

Welcome to Coffee Bluff Marina!!

My name is Capt. Ray Golden, and together with my wife, Amy, we have put together a fun marina where we only desire to make your day on the water memorable! Our store is geared toward recreational boating, fishing, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore Georgia’s fabulous coast and waterways, whether you’re fishing, crabbing, or simply trying to enjoy the natural settings of Savannah, Georgia!

We carry inshore and offshore baits and rigging, polarized sunglasses, aerators, all types of lead, and for fishing, we have a selection of Gulp baits, DOA, and popular hard baits such as MirroLure and ZaraSpooks. We also have crabbing supplies, terminal tackle, live bait such as shrimp, mud minnows, and fiddler crabs, and we carry a large selection of frozen baits, snacks, drinks, ice, and fuel.

If you don’t have a boat, we can rent you an 18 foot pontoon boat to get out and enjoy the water!

Our marina has anything you may need or forget on the water such as 4-stroke and 2-cycle oils, lubricants, ethanol treatments, boat cleaning supplies, all safety gear required to be on the water, anchor…chains…and ropes. We carry dock lines, flares, life jackets, and throw cushions, too!

Any type of rig, hook, lead, or float is in our shop…but you may just need to stop by and pick up some snacks or drinks…we have ice, coolers, and koozies. We also have T-shirts, hats, and maps of the area.

You may just need some crabbing supplies such as pots, floats, lines, or even bait…stop on in as we have it all! Speaking of baits, we carry live shrimp, live mud minnows that we refer to as PollyHawgs, and live fiddler crabs. For frozen bait, we carry shrimp, squid, ballyhoo, finger mullet, whole mullet, cigar minnows, chum, crab bait, and a whole host of other baits. If you just want to catch your own bait, we have casting nets, and of course, don’t forget a landing net, which we also stock.

Stop on by and introduce yourself…either Amy or I will be happy to show you where to go to catch some fish or crabs, or where to go just to enjoy your day!! We Want To Earn Your Business!!

Welcome to Coffee Bluff Marina!! Summer is coming soon!! We have a lot of neat stuff in store this year, starting with a brand spanking new $4 million marina!! Construction is set to start this year, with a projected finish by the end of 2012. On top of that, we have a lot of fishing seminars, guest speakers, tournaments, and events to make 2012 the best at Coffee Bluff! Here is a detailed list of tournaments and events through July, with a summary list for the remainder of 2012 behind that….. please feel free to join us for anything that catches your eye! Upcoming Tournaments and Events

1. On Saturday, May 26th, from 5:30 am until 8:30 am, we will have a Topwater Trout Seminar. We’ll depart the marina early on a 22 foot Pathfinder, and make our way to some speckled trout waters a short distance away. We’ll show you how to locate trout, and what kind of topwater lures work best for the conditions. We’ll go over the casting skills, rods & reels desired, and line strength, plus show you how to properly work your baits to target and catch speckled trout when blowing up a topwater bait! Seats are limited, and cost is $60 per angler. Call early to reserve your seat…put your float and live bait away and learn how to bust big trout on artificial lures!

2. On Friday, June 1st, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Coffee Bluff Marina will conduct a “Redfish in the Grass” Seminar. With a full moon and an 9.0 tide, that only means one thing…flooded grass! Calcutta’s will be for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Also, this is the weekend of the quarterly cookout…anyone interested in joining this fun club, stop by for details!

7. On Saturday, June 23rd, through Sunday, July 15th, will be the 3rd Annual Tripletail Rodeo…entry fee is $50 per angler. You have 23 days to weigh in 2 tripletail…no culling is allowed throughout the 23 days, so make sure you have your two big ones when you weigh in! You can weigh them in on separate days, or both together. Fish must be caught in Georgia waters…The heaviest weight of 2 tripletail will win the purse. It takes 2 tripletail to win…that is to say, 2 small tripletail will beat a huge single tripletail. If nobody catches 2 throughout the tournament, then the single biggest tripletail will win it all.

We’ll go over the casting skills, rods & reels desired, and line strength, plus show you how to properly work your baits to target and catch speckled trout when blowing up a topwater bait! Seats are limited, and cost is $60 per angler. Call early to reserve your seat…put your float and live bait away and learn how to bust big trout on artificial lures!

And, when the grass gets flooded, redfish get up in the grass to search for food! If you’ve ever wanted to see what a tailing redfish looks like, this is a great seminar. On the way to the flooded prairies, we cover different types of baits and rigging, and then we’ll show you what type of geographical terrain you are looking for to find these fish. Once there, we don our waders and start stalking, showing you how to locate, cast, and hopefully catch tailing reds! The cost of this seminar is $60 per angler.

Saturday, September 8th, 2012, from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm, Coastal Georgia Kayak Fishing will be on hand at Coffee Bluff Marina for a kayak fishing seminar – Kayak Fishing 101. This is an instructional seminar for the basics of kayak fishing. There will be 2 hours of land instruction on the kayak, equipment, safety, predators and prey that you are targeting, and knowing how to locate and catch redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Then, there will be 2 hours of instruction on the water covering basic paddling, anchoring, positioning, and target recognition. The cost for the seminar is $40 per angler. Saturday, December 15th, Coffee Bluff Marina will be host to the 4th Annual Christmas Light Parade and Chili Cookoff!

Reservation and Cancellation Policy

If a reservation is made within 14 days of a trip, seminar, or any other function, then full payment is due immediately.

If a reservation is made more than 14 days out from the event, a 50% deposit is due immediately to hold the reservation, and a check can be mailed to Coffee Bluff Marina, or a credit card can be given over the phone. The balance of the event fee is due 14 days prior to the event trip.

If a reservation is cancelled outside of 14 days from the event, and the reservation was paid for by cash or check, then a 100% refund will be given. If the reservation was made by credit card, then a 5% administrative fee will be charged, and the balance refunded.

If a reservation is cancelled within 14 days of the event, AND the seats can be filled, then a refund will be given based on the conditions listed in #3. If the seats cannot be filled, then the reservation WILL NOT be given a refund.

If a trip is cancelled due to inclement weather that is decided by Coffee Bluff Marina, then a 100% refund will be given regardless of how the trip was paid for…cash, check, or credit card.

Meet Coffee Bluff’s Fishing Team!!

Looking to go offshore, into the ocean? Meet Capt. Jackson Walker. We call him “Action Jackson”, and you’ll soon see why. Capt. Jackson has been fishing this area of Georgia’s coast for over 15 years, and has experience fishing along the Atlantic Seaboard from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Florida. Jackson has a 25 foot Parker, perfectly suited for taking a party of up to 5 out into the ocean for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, king mackerel, sheepshead, black seabass, jack crevalle, cobia, tripletail, flounder, or a host of other gamefish depending on the season and weather. And, for those of you who are serious about shark fishing…this is the trip for you!

Jackson offers a wonderful trip whether you are a hardcore angler or simply want to get the family out on the water for a day of fishing. Trips with Capt. Jackson will go out into the ocean up to 15 miles on a half-day excursion, which costs $400 for a 4 hour trip. Again, everything is provided except what you eat and drink. All bait and tackle, rods & reels, and fishing licenses are included in the price. You can extend the trip into deeper waters, going 6 hours for $600, or all day fishing a full day 10 hour trip, and that price is $900.

Interested in stalking tailing redfish, or sightcasting several different species of fish? Meet Capt. Ray Golden, owner and operator of Coffee Bluff Marina. Capt. Ray Golden comes to Savannah from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he and his wife, Amy, owned 2 bait and tackle shops and 5 charter fishing boats. They sold that business and came to Savannah in 2004 to chase redfish in the flats. They opened Tybee Island Bait & Tackle that same year, and recently sold that business to focus on the return of Coffee Bluff Marina to it’s heyday. The City of Savannah purchased the property at Coffee Bluff Marina in 2009, and set out to find a suitable operator. Capt. Ray and Amy Golden took the lease in June of 2009 to get a little bit closer to the reds!

If you’ve ever desired to sightcast bruiser reds, either in the flats or in the grass, this is the trip for you! Capt. Ray drives a 22 foot Pathfinder, perfectly fitted for shallow water fishing! The price of a 5 hour trip is $400, and includes everything except what you eat and drink. The price of the trip is the total price regardless of how many people in your party; HOWEVER, when you are sightcasting reds or flyfishing, it is highly recommended that you limit your party to a group of 2…3 is acceptable, but the more you have on the boat, the less you can achieve! Spinfishing or flyfishing is welcome. We can also construct the trip to teach you how to find the perfect flats and chase the fish should you be eager to learn how to do it on your own!

Now meet Capt. Jerry Case. The vessel Capt. Jerry prefers is his 22 foot Pathfinder, suitable for all types of inshore fishing. Jerry has lived all of his 60 years here in Savannah, and knows every nook and cranny of our local waters. He is quite skilled and diligent with putting his customers on fish, whether your desire is speckled trout, redfish, flounder, sheepshead, or various other species we find in our waters. Capt. Jerry can get you to some fish while providing you with a history of our immediate area along with all it’s natural beauty! The price of a 5 hour half-day trip with Capt. Jerry is $400, and includes everything for a day of fishing except what you need to eat and drink.
